After safely landing in Colombo, we spent a few days in Kandy with the family before we left for our first trip to the tea plantations in Nuwara Eliya. I don’t surprise you by telling you that Sri Lanka is very well-known across the world for its excellent tea, so we thought: What could be nicer than visiting the highlands with its tea plantations and stay in an actual (retired) tea factory?
The area is called Nuwara Eliya and we stayed at the Heritance Tea Factory Hotel. Getting there is actually not super convenient – traveling from A to B in Sri Lanka is always very exhausting – but on top of slow speeds and bumpy roads you have to deal with driving in wiggly lines all the time to get up to the mountains.
Upon arrival we were rewarded with the view on the tea factory which looks a little like the arkham asylum or the building from shutter island – amazing. The hotel inside was also outstanding, great staff, great food, great spa – probably the best hotel in the area.
However, if you want to work on your tan all day then I wouldn’t recommend going to Nuwara Eliya. The reason why Sri Lankans like this area the most is the the pleasantly moderate climate (see me bundled up in the pictures?). But if you want to experience the diversity of Sri Lanka, learn about tea-making, absorb the atmosphere of the highlands, taste amazing food (and tea obviously) or simply play some golf than you should make a stop here! It feels like a journey through time back to the colonial era. Next to the hotel even is a mini tea factory where you can pick your own leaves and experience the whole refining process yourself.
